2,808 Voters Cast Votes in Primary

Posted

Tuesday, March 5, 2014 was Super Tuesday or the day that most of the states vote in the primary presidential election. Trump, unsurprising to anyone who has been following this election, has come out on top. In Tennessee Trump secured 56 delegates and 447,219 votes, which is 77.3%.

Donald J. Trump received more than 12 times the votes as the next highest nominee at 2,251 votes. Nikki Haley, who has since dropped from the race got 181 votes. Ron DeSantis received 15 votes and ten voters remained uncommitted. Eight people voted for Chris Christie. There were seven write-in votes and five people chose Ryan Binkley. Asa Hutchinson and Vivek Ramaswamy both received one vote while David Stuckenberg received zero.

The Republican ballot not only had the presidential but the delegates. Delegates are representatives for the state or congressional districts. At-Large delegates are the same across the state while the district delegates are just for the district. Fentress County is in the 6th district.

Each delegate chooses who they wish to pledge support to, alternatively they can choose to remain uncommitted. Oftentimes people will choose the delegates that support the candidate they voted for, however that is not always the case.

On the other side of the aisle the Democratic primary was much simpler with only the presidential candidate, Joseph R. Biden who is running unopposed, and the option for a write-in or voting uncommitted. Surprising nobody, Biden won. In Tennessee Biden received 122,835 votes which is 92.2%. In Overton County Biden received 261 votes, with 40 voters remaining uncommitted and seven write-in votes.
