School Board Updates Closing Policy

The Overton County School Board has updated its emergency closing policy to address how it handles canceling high school sporting events.

According to the previous board policy, the principal of the high school was responsible to decide on canceling high school games.

Under the revised policy, the decision will be made by an executive committee made up of the Director of Schools and the School Board Chairman, with the Director making the ultimate decision and the Chairman disseminating that decision to the rest of the board.

According to current board Chairman Mike Hayes, the previous policy was in place because of the impact some cancellations have on TSSAA sports.

It was brought up, from a high school level, that there’s some TSSAA games that are district or region,” Hayes said. “It could get to the point that if they don’t play those games, that can knock them out of the playoffs; it can knock them out of the state tournament.”
