Overton County Commissioners met in a Public Safety Committee meeting last Thursday and heard updates from the Overton County Sheriff’s Department.
According to Chief Deputy Tim Poore, the census has increased significantly and the jail is now housing 140 prisoners.
“We’ve brought in a bunch here lately,” Poore said.
Poore said the department is still struggling with personnel. The department has brought in an additional deputy, but he will have to go to academy to train.
The department still lacks in corrections.
“Those are harder spots to fill than on the roads,” Poore said. “I think we still have five spots to fill. We had five leave at just about the same time. They all left for better paying jobs.”
