W.T. Bill Melton

W.T. (Bill) Melton, 88, of Livingston passed away Dec. 19. Funeral services were held Dec. 26 at the chapel of Hall Funeral Home. Interment followed in the Overton County Memorial Gardens. Bro. Kenny Westmoreland and Bro. Steve Jackson officiated.

He was born Oct. 28, 1932 in the Willow Grove Community. He graduated from Clay County High School in 1954. A former resident of Lebanon, he retired from TRW Ross Gear and later retired as a farmer in Moss. He had a life-long passion for high school football and basketball. For years, he officiated both sports as a member of the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA). For his successes as an official, an assigner, and as an officiating supervisor/ trainer, he was nominated and inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1998. He gained respect for his love of sports and of the student-athlete, his ability to motivate the officials that he trained and assigned, plus his unique ability to equate life’s lessons to the officials that were involved. He was truly a leader to all that knew him.

He was preceded in death by: parents, Herman and Mary (Sevier) Melton; first wife, Mildred Poston Melton; sisters, Alene, Kathleen and Frances; brothers, Bobby and Joe and infant brother, Aaron.

He is survived by: wife, Lola Geraldine Melton; sons, Gary, Ken and Jimmy Melton; daughter, Teri Jo Melton; brothers, Fred and George Melton; sister, Betty Smith; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Eula Garrett

Eula Garrett, 85, of Allons passed away Dec. 26 from the Livingston Regional Hospital. Graveside services were held Dec. 29 at the Garrett Family Cemetery. Bro. Alan Judd and Bro. Buddy Johnson officiated.

She was born in Boles, Ky. on July 4, 1935. She was a schoolteacher for 25 plus years and the children all loved her. She was a member of the Allons Church of Christ. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and she will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by: parents, Lester Guard and Anna Florence (Burnette) Kendall; sisters, Mary Simmons, Louise Arnett and Anna Jo Kendall; brothers, Bill Kendall and George Kendall.

She is survived by: husband, Paul Martin Garrett; daughters, Cynthia Leddy and husband, Steve, Pauletta Brady and husband, Roger and Margie Cavender and husband, Tim; grandchildren, Paul Leddy and wife, Angela, Katelyn Leddy, Lora Clouse and husband, James, Robert Brady and wife, Sarah, David Brady and wife, Kara and Brad Cavender and wife, Kara; great-grandchildren, Emery Clouse, Harper Clouse, Cash Clouse, Turner Clouse, Gaines Clouse, Bennett Cavender, Arabelle Brady and Ellington Brady; sister, Wanda Crowder; a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

 

Martha Ann Yarbrough

Martha Ann Yarbrough, 84, of Livingston passed away Dec. 28 from her residence. Funeral services were held Dec. 30 at the chapel of Hall Funeral Home. Interment followed Lauderdale Co. Memorial Gardens. Bro. Caleb Bowling officiated.

She was born in Searcy, Ark. On July 9, 1936. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She loved her family and friends very much.

She was preceded in death by: parents, Melvin and Mary Alice (Williams) Vess; husband, Jim Yarbrough; sister, Luceal Pilgrim; brothers, Andrew Vess, Henry Vess and Wilburn Vess.

She is survived by: daughter, Sharon Watkins and husband, John; sons, Arnold Carpenter and wife, Cheryl, Rick Carpenter and wife, Beth and Jeff Yarbrough; brother, Homer Vess; 24 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren along with a host of family and friends.

 

Jerry Simpson

Jerry B. Simpson, 71, of Celina passed away Dec. 25 from the Livingston Regional Hospital. There are no services scheduled at this time.

He was born on March 2, 1949 in Harlan, Ky. He was 1967 graduate in Harlan. He traveled the countryside as a long haul trucker.

He was preceded in death by: parents, Sam and Nancy Baker Simpson and twin brother, Terry Simpson and wife, Cheryl Carter.

He is survived by: sons, Jeremy Simpson and wife, Kim of Somerset, Ky. and Chris Simpson and wife, Regina of Paint Lick, Ky.

Jamie Murphy

Jamie “Bubba” Murphy, 45, of the LoveJoy Community passed away Jan. 1 from his residence. Graveside services were held Jan. 4 at the LoveJoy Cemetery. Rev. Greg Jenkins officiated.

He was born July 9, 1975 in Livingston. He worked with Perdue Farms for 17 years, working in the shipping and receiving department. He was Firefighter, certified in 2001 and was a fireman for over 20 years and served as Lieutenant with the Mountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue. He was Baptist in faith. He had a lifelong battle with diabetes.

He was preceded in death by: father, Robert James Murphy, Sr.; several aunts and uncles; Special Aunts, Willodean, Betty and Lori; Special Uncles, Billy, Doug and David Hassler and Special Cousin, Bobby Bilbrey.

He is survived by: mother, Marilyn Hassler Murphy of the LoveJoy Community; wife, Sheila Eldridge Murphy; daughters, Cassidy Murphy and Caitlyn Murphy; son, Robert J. Murphy; sister, Tammy Collins of Middlesboro, Ky.; brother, Matt Murphy; nephews, Devin and Dakota Collins of Middlesboro, Ky.; several aunts, uncles, cousins and many special friends and mother-in-law, Mary Eldridge of Monterey.

Pallbearers were Mountain Volunteer Fire and Rescue Firefighters.

Gilbert Poston

Gilbert Poston, 84, of McMinnville and formerly of Livingston passed away Dec. 23 from Webb House in McMinnville. Graveside services were conducted on Dec. 26 at the Overton County Memorial Gardens. Bro. Chris Coil officiated.

He was born in Jackson County on Oct. 11, 1936. He loved his family, visiting friends, and going to flea markets to trade knives. He loved going to church and spending time with his church family.

He was preceded in death by: parents, John and Zelma Allen Poston; brothers, Garvis Poston, Fowler Poston and Charlie Poston and sisters, Marie Hansel and Georgia Masters.

He is survived by: wife, Rose Ann Poston; daughter, Tami Ross and husband, Larry of McMinnville and sister, Jeanette Brown and husband, Keith of Hilham.

Pallbearers who served were Chris Brown, Charlie Sells, Bruce Barlow, and Larry Ross. Honorary Pallbearers were Allen Loftis, Jack McCormick, and Keith Gaw.

Martha Warden

Martha Bernice Davis Warden, 98, of Livingston passed away Dec. 30 from the Overton County Health & Rehab. Graveside services were held Jan. 4 from the Holly Springs Cemetery. Bro. Chris Ward officiated.

She was born Oct. 25, 1922 in Hilham. She was a 1940 graduate of Livingston Academy. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, strawberry milkshakes, making necklaces and bracelets, her family and getting her hair done.

She was preceded in death by: parents, Noah Frank and Mary Emma Davis; husband, Carvel Warden; sons, Kelly Gene Warden and Robert Gray Warden; brothers, Earl Fred Davis and James Davis; sisters, Edith Maxwell, Gladys Atwood, Jennie Livingston and Rebecca Lausack.

She is survived by: grandchildren, Carmen Oberg-Hendley and husband, Tony and Kelly Lynn French and husband, Eric; great-grandchildren, Robert Oberg, Arynn Hendley, Kenzi Hendley and Kayla Hendley; sisters, Dorothy Stanton and Helen Jane Myers and special niece, Carol Lausack.

Pallbearers were: Vance Williams, Brandon Hodge, James Williams, Roy Ogletree, Seth Parker, Chase Warden and Greg Warden.

Leona Averitt

Jessie Leona McDonald Averitt, 97, of Livingston passed away Dec. 31 from the Livingston Regional Hospital. Celebration of Life services will be conducted at a later date.

She was born in the Alpine Community on July 14, 1923. She was a 1941 high school graduate and later received her Associates Degree. She taught school in her younger years. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Livingston. She enjoyed being a Community Volunteer Worker for many years.

She was preceded in death by: parents, John Allen and Myrtle Smith McDonald; husband, J.B. Averitt; brother, Charles McDonald; sisters, Clara McDonald, Lou Ann McDonald and Louise White.

She is survived by: daughter, Peggy Endicott of Knoxville; son, Ricky Averitt of Livingston and granddaughter, Bethany Endicott-Phier of Livingston.

Willie Phillips

Willie B. Phillips, 86, of Hilham passed away Dec. 29 from Signature Health Care in Algood. Graveside services were held Jan. 2 at the Aaron Chapel Cemetery. Bro. Sonny Gilpatrick and Bro. Ronnie McCowan officiated.

He was born in the Greenbriar Community of Hilham on April 3, 1934. He was the oldest of seven children. He loved his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed farming, his dog, eating out, his church family and family gatherings.

He was preceded in death by: parents, Buren and Mary Ethel Young Phillips; sister, Willa Dean Neely; brothers, Haywood, Thurman and Howard Phillips; brother-in-laws, Noel, Delmer and Elmer Guffey; sister-in-law, Myrle “TG” Wilson and husband, Erza.

He is survived by: wife, Mascle Guffey Phillips; sons, Willie B. Phillips, Jr. and wife, Lana, Billy Phillips and wife, Lesa and Donnie Phillips and wife, Kathy; grandchildren, Courtney King and husband, James, Charity Phillips, Ethan Phillips, Roxanne Sidwell and husband, Jason, Brittany Haggard and husband, Matt, Felicia Phillips, Brandy Beaty and Logan Beaty and wife, Chelsea; great-grandchildren, Katelyn King, Lenae Myers, Millie Jo Haggard, Kayson Phillips, Azreal Linder, Nora Beaty and Bo Beaty; brother, Johnny Joe Phillips and wife, Martha; sister, Mary Alice Buck; sister-in-law, Mable Newberry and husband, Earl and Opal Guffey; many wonderful nieces and nephews.

Grace Beaty Morgan

Mrs. Grace Beaty Morgan of Michigan, 97, born to the late Ogle and Winnie Beaty on Highland Mountain.

She was the fourth child of 14. She married Bill Morgan Jan. 5, 1947 and they had one son, Johnny.

In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by six brothers, Benton, Robert, OT, Luther, Herbert and Lester Beaty; and sister, Christine Beaty Hinkles.

She is survived by: son and wife, Rossene; two daughters and one granddaughter; two great-grandsons of Florida and Michigan; one brother, Willie and wife, Berta; five sisters, Sadie Vaughn, Betty Perdue, Flora and Wendell Baker of Tennessee; Hazel Reefert of Michigan and Louise and Ernest Matheney of Indiana, nephews and nieces, cousins and dear friends.

She chose cremation.

Clara Daulton

Clara E. Chilton Daulton, 92, of Allons passed away Dec. 27 from the Overton County Health & Rehab. Private graveside services were held from the Fellowship Cemetery.

She was born May 7, 1928 in the Carter’s Creek area of Clay County. She was a 1946 graduate and Methodist in Faith. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, old westerns, word puzzles, bluegrass music and the Grand Ole Opry.

She was preceded in death by: parents, Joe Chatt and Louella E. Booher Chilton; husband, Clifford J. Daulton; infant son, Michael Daulton; brothers, Edward Finis Chilton and Joe Edwind Chilton and sisters, Lila Jean Robison, Norma C. Chilton and Sara Mae Lee Chilton.

She is survived by: son, Craig Eugene Daulton and wife, Kathleen of Monroe; granddaughter, Rebecca Dilldine and husband, Jonathon of Cookeville; sister, Ina Ruth Chilton of Allons and a host of nieces and nephews.
