The Overton County Records Commission met in a meeting last Monday and heard the unexpected resignation of Overton County Archivist Larry Gunnels.
Gunnels said he tendered his resignation during the meeting due to his discontent in the lack of security expected in the new county building within the archives, among many other things.
According to Gunnels, he met with Overton County Executive Ben Danner in July 2019 and asked questions concerning the security of the archives in the administrative building, and all requests were denied.
“We met again July 24, and I still received the same no’s,” Gunnels said.
In Gunnels’ written resignation letter, he indicated that he had requested security cameras to be installed within the archives to prevent theft of important historical documents; however, Danner said that they are not needed due to the layout of the archives and there is no entrance into the archives without passing by security cameras at the main entrances.
