McCord Corporation Reunion

A McCord Corporation reunion is to be held on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cookeville Community Center. Bring a covered dish. There will be drawings for door prizes.

Parent-Child Connection Class To Be Held

The Stephens Center support group Parent-Child Connection is to hold orientation for their Fall 2018 Series 1 that includes eight classes beginning with an assessing nurturing skills class on Wednesday, Aug. 1 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at the Stephens Center located at 616 North Church Street in Livingston. L.A. Band Fund Raiser To Be Held

Livingston Academy Band will be hosting their first annual Mattress Fundraiser on August 4, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The L.A. gym will transform into a 20 plus bed showroom filled with all sizes and styles with name available for up to 50 percent-off retail prices. Watch for area yard signs and for the few lucky kids who get to wear the “mattress suit” while promoting the sale to passersby.

Chili Challenge Cook-Off To Be Held

The sixth annual Chili Challenge Cook-Off fundraiser is to be held on Sept. 28 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Livingston Central Park. Proceeds are to benefit local non-profit Teen Challenge of the Upper Cumberland. L.B.J. & C. Development Corporation Bi-monthly Meeting To Be Held

The L.B.J. & C. Development Corporation Board of Director’s will hold their bi-monthly meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 14 at the L.B.J.& C. Development Corporation, 1150 Chocolate Drive, Cookeville, Tennessee. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m.

Dinner Benefit To Be Held

A dinner benefit for Brice Murphy to assist with medical expenses is to be held on Saturday, Aug. 4 at the Doyle Methodist Church on 5085 McMinnville Hwy in Doyle. Chili, hot dogs, pinto beans and desserts are available for dinner purchase. An auction is to follow with firearms, homemade quilts and other various items. Livingston Academy Registration, Open House and Orientation Day To Be Held

Registration on Aug. 1 is for new students and transfer students only and does not include incoming ninth grade students who attended the eighth grade in Overton County. Open House on Aug. 2 is for ninth graders and their parents/guardians. Ninth grade students will receive schedules, and parents/guardians may attend an informational meeting with school administrators and guidance counselors in the school theater. They may also meet with ninth grade teachers. Orientation Day is on Aug. 3 and this is the first full day for all students.

Coffee With A Vet To Be Held

Livingston’s American Legion Post 4 and Auxiliary Unit 4 along with VFW Post 5062 will be hosting “Coffee with a Veteran” on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the VFW Post building. We are inviting the public and those who have served or who are currently serving in our armed forces to come and have coffee, conversation and enjoy the comradeship.

American Legion Meetings To Be Held

The Livingston American Legion and Auxiliary will meet on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at post headquarters located at 121 S. Church St. The Auxiliary will meet at 5:30 p.m. and the Legion will meet at 6 pm.

American Legion Dance To Be Held

The newly air-conditioned Livingston American Legion and Auxiliary are hosting a dance featuring the Slick Nickel Band on Saturday, Aug. 4 from 7 to 10 p.m. at 121 S. Church St. All dances are family friendly. Concessions available.

UCHRA Commodity Distribution

In Hanging Limb To Be Held

The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency (UCHRA) will hold a commodities distribution for Overton County Hanging Limb on Tuesday, Aug. 7 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Hanging Limb Fire Department, Hanging Limb. Everyone must present a valid UCHRA commodity card in order to receive commodities. To sign up or reprint lost commodities cards contact your local UCHRA office.

Historical Society Monthly Meetings To Be Held

The Overton County Historical Society monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday night of each month unless otherwise announced at the Millard Oakley Public Library Meeting Room beginning at 5:30 p.m.The next meeting will be held Aug. 7 with guest speaker Randall Dial. He will present a program about the Independence School History including consolidation of community schools in the community area along with more interesting information. Everyone is welcome to the meetings. You do not have to be a member to attend – but membership is open to all. Yearly membership includes four newsletters published quarterly. Genealogy Classes Announced For August And September 2018

The Millard Oakley Public Library’s Genealogy Room will be the location of twice monthly genealogy and history classes.   These will be on a first come basis as seats are available. These classes will be held the second and fourth Thursday of each month beginning at 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. These sessions will be taught by County Historian Ronald Dishman and Louise Stover, both experienced researchers who are members of the Overton County Historical Society. The classes are being held to try and help new beginners as well as others to learn new ideas, techniques, to further their research and solve genealogy puzzles they may have. On Aug. 9, Available Microfilm Records: how to use the microfilm machine; what microfilm is available and microfilm records accessible on internet locations. On Aug. 23, Available Free Internet Sites: what is accessible; how to search them, etc. On Sept. 13, Census Records / Agricultural Census: Internet and book access; other available early census search resources; how to use what can be found; how to decipher, etc. On Sept. 27, obituaries, how to research them; where to look to use them for furthering your research, etc.

Smith And Sells Reunion

The Smith and Sells Reunion will be held on Sunday, Aug. 5 at Standing Stone State Park in the Tea Room starting at noon. All family and friends welcome. Please bring a covered dish.
