Glyna P. Martin, 78, of Livingston passed away Jan. 1 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Private burial services were held Jan. 3 at the Martin Cemetery in Allons with Rev. Craig Green officiating.

Glyna P. Martin was born Oct. 2, 1934, in Fentress County. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church in Livingston.

She was preceded in death by her parents Glen Dailey and Marie Pyle Crouch.

Surviving relatives include her husband Frank Martin of Livingston; daughters Teresa and husband Matthew Frazier of Norman, OK, Missy and husband Bruce Shook of Livingston, and Melinda Davis of Havelock, NC; brother Gene Crouch of Pall Mall; sister Mary McCoy of Burkesville, KY; grandchildren Lauren (and Josh) Coffman, Katie (and Kyle) Gaw, Diana Davis, Trey Davis and Charles “Trey” King; and great grandchildren Rylee Coffman, Ryder Coffman and Kamryn Gaw.

Alvin Houston Huddleston

Bank President And U.S. Army Veteran

Alvin Houston Huddleston, 90, died peacefully at Livingston Regional Hospital on Thursday, Jan. 10.

Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 14 at First United Methodist Church. Interment followed in the Overton County Memorial Gardens.

Alvin Houston Huddleston was born on March 23, 1922, in Pickett County, the eldest child of the late Morrison Haskell “Hass” Huddleston and Frankie Vaughn Huddleston.

When he was 2 years old, his family moved to Overton County where he spent the remainder of his life. As a child, he attended several one- and two-teacher schools, with his father being the teacher and principal. He attended Alpine Institute for two years during the time his family lived in Black Hollow in Overton County. The family had moved from Copeland Cove to Black Hollow to care for his grandfather. The family later returned to Copeland Cove in Overton County.

He graduated from Livingston Academy in 1940 and entered Tennessee Tech the same year. At the end of the second year he met a girl he never forgot and also enlisted in the U.S. Army.

Becoming a Medic at Fittzsimmons General Hospital in Denver, CO, after basic training at Camp Grant, IL, he spent approximately two-and-a-half years in the service as a member of the 160th Infantry Regiment’s Medical Detachment, experiencing combat on many different occasions in the Pacific.

Among honors, he received the Bronze Star for heroic services – remaining on the front line for 53 continuous days on Luzon and for 84 successive days on Nergos and Panay, both islands in the Pacific.

Huddleston returned home in December 1945 and entered Tennessee Tech to finish his studies. He also traveled to Algood to see that girl he never forgot. Huddleston graduated from Tennessee Tech with a bachelors of science in agriculture in 1946. He and Rosemary Coulson married Oct. 13, 1946.

After teaching veterans on the farm for three years, Huddleston entered Union Bank & Trust Company in October 1949 as a farm agent under the recommendation of Mr. W.E. Dulaney. Working his way up, he was named president of Union Bank & Trust Company in 1967. He retired from this position in 1981 after 32 years of service.

Other interests include past president of the Livingston Jaycees, past commander of American Legion Bohannon Post 4, past president of Livingston PTA, past president of Group 3 Tennessee Bankers Association, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, past president of the Overton County Walking Horse Association, a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders’ and Exhibitors’ Association, director and charter member of the Overton County Friends of the Library and a member of First United Methodist Church.

Always making time for both of his children, he shared his great love for walking horses and the hobby with them. You could always find him next to the show ring cheering them on.

During his years of retirement, he became an avid antique knife collector and became friends with many other collectors across the United States.

Huddleston was a fiercely loving husband, a proud and nurturing father, a supporting brother and a generous friend to many. He was a true gentleman in every way with a profound love for family, lived with dignity and purpose and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. His children and his grandchildren will have the fond memories of his life stories, the dry wit, the mischievous twinkle in his eye and the unconditional love for them that will serve as reminders of his influence until they meet again.

Huddleston is predeceased by his parents; his wife Rosemary Coulson Huddleston, to whom he was married for 56 years; his brothers Haskell Ward “Cracker” Huddleston, and Bobby Keith Huddleston. He is survived by his two children Sandra Curtis of Albertville, AL, and Maria Huddleston of Livingston and special friend Steve Jolley; brother Oren Frank Huddleston of Livingston; and sister Leretha Harris of Livingston. He is also survived by three grandchildren Charley Curtis of Albertville, AL, Susan Curtis of Albertville, AL, and Rebecca Curtis of Antioch; great-granddaughter, Ayla Gipson of Albertville, AL; and many nieces and nephews.

The family expresses its deepest gratitude to Dr. Vincent Fromke and Alvin Huddleston’s devoted caregivers, Dean McCormick and Patricia Sullivan. They would also like to thank Susan Sims for her help on several weekends.

Active pallbearers included Bill Bilbrey, Tony Huddleston, Mike Huddleston, Robert Huddleston, Bruce Harris, David Harris and Walter Coulson. Honorary pallbearers included Union Bank & Trust Co. employees. In addition, Grover Brown, Estelene Cobble, Jessie Parrott, Hershel Wilson, Lynn Reagan, Sue Haile Reynolds, Wanda Coleman, Tom Davis, Wayne Triplett, David Webb, Jim Means, David Parsons, Randall Bilbrey and Dr. Vincent Fromke.

Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Livingston, Bethlehem Methodist Church of Livingston, the Algood City Cemetery or the American Cancer Society. Speck Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Cecil Crawford

Pharmacist And U.S. Army Veteran

Cecil Lloyd Crawford, 81, of Austin Bottom community passed away Jan. 6 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were held Jan. 12 at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church with Rev. Joe Weatherly and Father Herb Caplin officiating. Inurnment followed in St. Michael’s Columbarium.

Cecil Lloyd Crawford was born April 2, 1931, in Putnam County. He was a pharmacist and his career included working at Walgreen’s in Memphis, Cecil Davis Medical Pharmacy in Cookeville, Winningham Drugs in Livingston and along with being a longtime pharmacist for Cookeville General Hospital. In 1979 he purchased Sparta Discount Drugs which he owned and operated until his retirement. He was longtime member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church and the Tennessee Pharmaceutical Association. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents Alvin Sercy and Rose Elizabeth Williford Crawford; and sister Golda Jones.

Surviving relatives include his sons Emmett Crawford and wife Carla of Monterey, and Henry Dewey Crawford and girlfriend Kim French of Baxter; daughters Meekel Edna-Reed Goff and Martelia Crawford, both of Cookeville, and Sabra Rinio and husband Earl of Sparta; brother Donald Crawford and wife Wilma of Old Hickory; sisters Willene Flatt and Claudine Richardson, both of Algood; 12 grandchildren; and several great and great-great grandchildren.

Mary Virginia Lane Maddux

Professor And Assistant Director Of Admissions

Funeral services for Mary Virginia Lane Maddux, 98, were held Jan. 12 at First United Methodist Church in Cookeville.  Burial followed at Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Cookeville. Rev. Max Mayo and Rev. Drew Shelley officiated.

Mrs. Maddux died Wednesday evening, Jan. 9 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

She was born June 16, 1914, in Wickliffe, KY, to the late Gertrude Nichols Lane and Joseph Ernest Lane.

Mary Virginia graduated valedictorian from Cookeville High School and attended Tennessee Polytechnic Institute.  She transferred to Eastern Kentucky State College in Richmond, KY, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.  She received her Master of Arts from Tennessee Tech University. She taught in elementary and high schools in Covington, KY, and Elizabethton, TN.

After she married the late Jared Maddux, the family lived in Nashville, where Jared served as Tennessee State Comptroller. Jared and Mary Virginia moved back to Cookeville in 1948 where he practiced law and also served four terms as Speaker of the Senate and Lieutenant Governor of the State of Tennessee. In addition to raising their three children, Mary Virginia was an active church and civic volunteer in Cookeville.

At the First United Methodist Church in Cookeville, Mary Virginia was a Sunday school teacher, a member of numerous church committees and was elected chair of her church circle.  She was the president of the local United Methodist Women and the president of the District Methodist Women.  Additionally, she served as the president of the Wesley Foundation Board of Directors and as a member of the Triad Board of Directors.

She was president of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 46 and held the position of director of government at Volunteer Girls State in Murfreesboro for more than 25 years.  She also conducted the mock legislative sessions at American Legion Boys State at Tennessee Tech for many years.

Mary Virginia was a literacy advocate for several years and taught numerous adults to read as a tutor in the Adult Literacy Program for the Putnam County Literacy Council.  Mary Virginia helped start the program and also became the Literacy Council’s first president.  In addition, she also served on both the Upper Cumberland Board and the Putnam County Library Board.  She was also president of the Upper Cumberland Guidance Counselor’s Association and was a longtime member of the Cookeville House and Garden Club.

After her children all started going to school, Mary Virginia returned to work as an adjunct mathematics professor at Tennessee Tech University.  She later became the assistant director of admissions for the University and traveled to high schools throughout the state to recruit students for Tennessee Tech.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; and by her brother Joseph E. Lane Jr.

Her family includes her daughter, Virginia Maddux Moore; son Judge John Jared Maddux Jr. and wife Lynne; and daughter Rachel Maddux Rader and husband Dan.  She is survived by her eight grandchildren, Lane Moore (Shannon), Lara Moore Mowery (Joel), Jared Maddux (Jennifer), Sara Maddux Robertson (Joseph), Daniel Rader IV, Mary Virginia (Ginna) Rader Felts (Tucker), Rachel Elizabeth (Beth) Rader Dunklau (Henry) and John Rader; and her eleven precious great grandchildren.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren and nephews, Joe Lane and Tom Maddux.  Honorary pallbearers were Margaret Hale, Virginia Gibson, Lessie Hayes, Linda Hawkins, Mary Byrd King and George King.

Danny Lee Poston

Construction Worker

Danny Lee Poston, 37, of Livingston passed away Jan. 8 at his home. Funeral services were held Jan. 12 at Oak Hill United Methodist Church in Rickman with Dr. Chris Sparkman and Rev. Jeff Cotterman officiating. Interment followed in the Oak Hill Cemetery.

Danny Lee Poston was born April 29, 1975, in Warner Robbins, GA. He was a construction worker and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Iraq War. He was also a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his daughter Marlee Marie Poston, and grandfathers Bobby Huddleston and D.T. Poston.

Surviving relatives include his wife Carey Byrd Poston of Oak Ridge; parents Mark A. and Anna Poston of Livingston; son Rylan Grant Poston of Comanche, OK; stepsons Balee McAuley and Jayden Byrd; sisters Rachel Cox and husband Aaron of Cookeville, and Melinda Poston of Algood; brother Matt Poston of Nashville; grandmother Imogene Poston of Livingston, and grandmother and step-grandfather Betty and Jerry Monday of AcWorth, GA; nephews Connor and Weston Smith, and Harrison Cox, all of Cookeville; and uncles and aunts David Poston Jr. of Troy, IL, Joel Poston of Livingston, Robert Huddleston of Jonesborough, Mary Newberry of Dallas, TX, and Martha Ashley of Loudon.

Wanda Nell Turner

Wanda Nell Turner, 74, of Needham, IN, passed away Jan. 10 at Homeview Health and Rehab in Franklin, IN. Funeral services were held Jan. 13 from the chapel of Hall Funeral Home of Livingston with Bro. David Beaty officiating. Interment followed in the Green Hill Cemetery.

Wanda Nell Turner was born July 12, 1938, in Livingston.

She was preceded in death by her father Price Franklin.

Surviving relatives include her mother Myrtie Norris Franklin of Alpine; daughter Sherrie Franklin and Don Study of Shelbyville, IN; sons John Turner and wife Lisa of Avon, IN, and Stephen Turner and Samuel Cronk of Indianapolis, IN; and sisters Jean Carwile of Livingston and Mary Howard of Alpine.

Jeffrey Alan Ayers Carpenter

Jeffrey Alan Ayers, 50, of Bokeelia, FL, passed away Dec. 5 at Cape Coral Hospital in Florida. Funeral services were held Jan. 12 from Shiloh Church in Hilham with Bro. Craig Green officiating. Interment followed in the Poplar Springs Cemetery.

Jeffrey Alan Ayers was born in Anderson, IN. He worked construction as a carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Phyllis Plew Ayers; brother Joe Ayers; and sister Candy Ayers.

Surviving relatives include his sisters Mary Taylor of Cookeville, and Jodi Bain and Patti Helms, both of Anderson, IN; and brother Johnny Ayers of Alexandria, IN.

Howard Ray Hawkins

Howard Ray Hawkins, 60, of Hilham passed away Jan. 10 at Livingston Regional Hospital. Funeral services were held Jan. 12 from the chapel of Hall Funeral Home  of Livingston with Bro. Ralph Shipley and Bro. Bobby Gore officiating. Interment followed in the Maxwell Chapel Cemetery in Hilham.

Howard Ray Hawkins was born Sept. 18, 1952, in Gainesboro.

He was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Lizzie (Stewart) Hawkins.

Surviving relatives include his wife Sandra Kaye Hawkins of Hilham; sons Shawn Hawkins of Atlanta, GA, Brian Smith and friend Sondra of Byrdstown, and Eric Hawkins and wife Callie of Rickman; grandchildren Chelsie Smith, Hannah McDonald and Haylee McDonald; sister-in-law Linda Smith; brothers-in-law Doug Hawkins, and Lawrence Hawkins and wife Patsy; and a host of cousins, family and friends.

Wanda Lumpford Boyer, 63, of Howell, MI, passed away Jan. 5 at Arbor Hospice Care. Funeral services were held Jan. 12 from the chapel of Hall Funeral Home of Livingston with Bro. Mike Ayers officiating. Interment followed in the Maxwell Chapel Cemetery.

Wanda Lumpford Boyer was born in Detroit, MI, on March 19, 1949. She worked in transportation as a bus driver.

She was preceded in death by her parents Esau and Jewell Ramsey Lumpford.

Surviving relatives include her daughters Michelle Binks and husband Paul, Patti Caldwell and husband Ken, and Lori Ott and husband Larry; brother Ray Lumpford and Susie; sister Pam McPherson and husband Jerry; and grandchildren Cameron Caldwell, Jaylynn Smiley, Kyle March, Shelby March, Grace Ott and Joy Ott.

Rita Phillips, 59, of Monterey passed away Jan. 11 at her home. Funeral services were held Jan. 16 from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Joe Hedgecough officiating. Interment followed in the Phillips Cemetery of the Anderson community.

Rita Phillips was born July 24, 1953, in Livingston. She was a homemaker. She had worked in healthcare and was a member of the Lakeside Freewill Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her father Reed Allred; sister Jennifer Allred; and brother Ronnie Allred.

Larry Landers, 66, of Monterey passed away Jan. 11 at his home. Funeral servics were held Jan. 14 from the chapel of Goff Funeral Home with full military honors by the Veterans Honor Guard. Rev. Richard Harris officiated.

Larry Landers was born June 8, 1946, in Overton County. He was the owner and operator of Landers Discount Tires. He was also a U.S. Marine veteran and a member of Columbia Hill Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Rachel Smith Landers; sister Katherine Jones; and brother James Smith.

Surviving relatives include his wife Donna Wilkins Landers of Monterey; daughter Nicki Landers and Leslie Fish of Crossville; sons Chad Landers of Crossville, Kevin and Amy Shouse of Monterey, and Joey Sheets of Monterey; sister Doris Taylor of Monterey; brothers Eddie and Dianna Landers, and Tony and Margaret Landers, all of Monterey; brother-in-law Frank Jones of Monterey; and grandchildren Jessy Fish, Leslie Lee Fish, Clay Landers, Addison Landers, Jacob Shouse and Matthew Shouse.
