Board Scrutinizes Teacher Tenure

Members of the Overton County Board of Education held a work session last week to talk in more detail to the county’s school principals who are recommending teachers for tenure this year.

“We, as a board, want to ensure that we’re hiring effective and quality people,” said board member Jarman Hicks. “From this point forward, it’s not going to be ‘the board wanted this person hired’ or ‘the politics were ….’ It’s going to be ‘does the principal think these are highly recommendable people for these positions?’ We want to make sure that if we’re going to grant tenure to teachers, we want to know that they’re good employees, they’re good educators and they’re good people.”
